J. William Middendorf II, a former Republican Diplomat and Secretary of the Navy, was asked why he wrote a book at the age 95. What he said made me realize how much his statement could apply to the field of genealogy. He said “a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they shall never sit in.” A genealogist is planting seeds of the past, showing lines of descent, so future generations have a complete tree; but in the end we may never “sit in the shade of the trees that we have planted.”
